Hello, and welcome back to another episode of All Things Skin, wellness and Faith.
Speaker 1:Today we are having a little discussion where we are just going to jump into talking about some of our eating and some wellness remedies and a couple other things in relation to what we are ingesting and putting in our mouths and how it affects our overall well-being. So today's episode is titled your Body is a Temple. What does that really mean? Biblically meaning, it means your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit and that basically what we are putting into our stomachs. So what we're going to talk about today, basically, is what we are putting into our stomachs and how it affects us, not only naturally but also spiritually. So stay tuned today as we go into a really interesting topic and discussion. Now, as an esthetician as I am always treating people holistically from a whole body point of view and treating in skincare from the inside out I'm always talking about how what we eat affects our skin. This is something that I feel like is not really a new topic. I think that we all have a general understanding of this, but today I want to take a deep dive into what that really looks at and, of course, I just don't want to give you a problem, but I'd like to give you a solution as well. What are some ways that we can really, practically without beating ourselves up, take an approach that will help shed some light and bring us some answers and bring us to a place where we're actually moving forward and getting progress in these areas, but also not feeling you know condemned, beating ourselves up, feeling you know bad about ourselves? This is a topic that I actually spoke on a few weeks ago at a women's retreat that I did in Connecticut, so this is more or less a little redo of that, but basically just talking about how what we eat really affects us more deeper than what we know. So when we're dealing with skincare and, like I said, this is something that's not new.
Speaker 1:I'm sure we are aware that the foods that we ingest, the foods that we eat, tend to take a toll on our skin. They take a toll on our skin because they take a toll on our body, and what our skin is doing is reflecting what's going on inside of us, to give us a window and a narrative as to kind of tell us like, hey, this is not working out well, I'm not able to digest this. This is, you know, giving me a little bit of you know what's the word I want to use Giving me a little bit of trying to think I'm sorry, I'm stumped for words for a second Giving wreaking a little bit of havoc on a certain specific area within our bodies that correlates with where it shows up on our skin, and that's where we're going to talk about skin mapping. If you're not familiar with what skin mapping is, it pretty much just shows us that different areas on our face, whether it be our jawline or our forehead or jowls or our nose or underneath our eyes, correlates specifically with certain parts of our bodies that are distressed. So I'll give you an example when I'm treating a client, if they come in and I look at them and I see breakouts, specifically on the forehead area.
Speaker 1:I know that that area can relate, depending on whether it's more so to the temples or it's more so to the center of the forehead or whether it's that in between, like the middle forehead area, like in between your eyes, like the bridge of your nose. I know that those specific areas correlate with certain parts of the body. It can be the bladder, it can be the small intestine Underneath the, over the eyebrow area can relate to the heart, the temples. The side area can relate to the gallbladder area Under the eyes, can relate also to the heart or the kidneys, depending on what I'm seeing, what type of pimple or what type of bump I'm seeing, and then you have like the jawline, which is the upper jawline, the lower jawline, which will be your large and your small intestine, and then anything usually going on underneath the mouth area, like in that chin to mouth area, is usually like your pelvic organs, like in that chin to mouth area, is usually like your pelvic organs. So when you have like your peri or postmenopausal type of symptoms, those tend to appear in that area and also for those of us that still have our menses, any type of breakouts around the time of our periods will also appear in that area, and what that does is it gives us a little bit of insight as to what part of our bodies we can start to look at to try and remedy these situations that we see on our face.
Speaker 1:Now, ideally, if I'm dealing with someone that has, like, a dairy issue or dairy concern, I'll usually see that in the cheek area. I may also see that if they happen to have their period and they also are also consuming a lot of dairy. We may see that in the chin area and then also a little bit in the side of the nose, in the middle to lower jawline area. If you're dealing with someone that has a sensitivity to gluten, you'll usually see that in the liver area, because that's what the gluten does it's an inability to digest that. So you'll usually see that, more so in the forehead area. This kind of gives me a heads up on how to direct the client on not only how I'm treating them within the treatment room, but this also helps me take a deeper look into what they are ingesting and how I can help them and guide them towards foods that may be hindering them per se. Now, since I am not just also an esthetician, I'm also a clinical herbalist, this also helps guide me in what herbs I may use or what type of remedy I may use for remedying that situation. Whether it's digestion, if it's in the liver area, it may help guide and clue me in as far as to what kind of herbs that I can suggest to them For herbal remedies, also depending on factors like what other health conditions they may have and also what other medications they may be on.
Speaker 1:So this is where it's very important, when you're treating with herbal remedies and I speak on this all the time to not so much DIY it, because herbal medicine is also just as potent as any other synthetic medicine or prescription medicine. So a lot of the times when we go out and we can do a random Google search and we can see okay, turmeric may help with inflammation or ginger may help with my digestion there are a lot of things to take into consideration when we are using these herbal remedies, like what other health conditions are we dealing with? And I'll just give you a quick example For turmeric it's excellent for inflammation. However, if you are on a blood thinner, it is definitely not a good thing to use because it helps increase blood flow, which is not something that you want to have going on if you're on like Eloquist or any other type of blood thinner. So this is why going to a professional to get help with these things are key, because we just sometimes know things that the average consumer may not know that may actually be more harmful to your health than helpful.
Speaker 1:Now, going into this, not only talking about foods, there are definitely foods that we may, we absolutely should, stay away from, and I, a lot of the times when I deal with this subject, I feel like the foods are. It feels like they're easy, like to the average consumer you may already be aware of and you may already know that, okay, I don't want to eat a lot of greasy foods, I don't want to eat chips and sugar and all these different things, and nowadays there's so much information on the internet that you may know far beyond that. Some people, people's knowledge is really all over the place. So if I'm saying something that's common sense to you, just keep in mind that it may not be common sense to another listener, and so I try to cover a wide range of information as I'm giving you information. Some people may know some things and some people just may not. Everyone's on a different level. So, as we're talking about things like dairy, gluten, sugar, alcohol, things like that, it may be common sense, but then to someone else it may not.
Speaker 1:Now, a lot of times when I am diagnosing someone or I'm looking at different things within their face, as I'm doing a skin analysis and I'm relating it to skin mapping, a lot of the times I'll say something very simple, like you know, okay, what's your sugar intake like? And a lot of people may say, oh, I don't eat a lot of sugar. You know, I don't like a lot of sweets or something like that, and you may not, but then you have to also be mindful of are you eating bagels? Are you eating a lot of white breads? Those are things that also can convert to sugar and they can also, you know, hinder you in the same way that sugar is, you know, going to affect you. So those are some things to take into consideration as well.
Speaker 1:A lot of things. A lot of times I hear a lot of things. Like you know, I eat really well, I eat organic, but then for someone that is, you know, dealing with acne or dealing with oily skin. You may be eating organic, but you can also be eating organic peanut butter or you can be eating organic, you know, farm raised eggs. While those things may be deemed, you know, technically good for you the term I always use is just because it's good for you it may not be good for you specifically. So when we're looking at the foods that we're eating and we're seeing problems within our health problems pop ups on little pop ups with pimples on our skin A lot of the times what I'd like to recommend is doing a food diary or food journal and then also an elimination diet.
Speaker 1:Those things are really key and really helpful as you're trying to figure out what it is that may be hindering you or causing a lot of breakouts in your skin. Because usually what we find is that we're eating things on a regular basis and we don't even realize that we eat these things because it's such routine for us that we don't realize that these things that even may be deemed healthy still may be, you know, not good for us. So a lot of times, if you kind of just track for a week or two what is it that you consume, you can see that a lot of the foods you eat that may be bothering you either come in the same food group. So, for example, right now I have a lot of clients that have gardens, and so a lot of them are eating a lot of tomatoes. I'm seeing a lot of clients that have gardens, and so a lot of them are eating a lot of tomatoes. I'm seeing a lot of tomato consumption.
Speaker 1:Now, tomatoes, they're grown organic. They have a lot of lycopene in them. They're technically, they're good for you, but they are also acidic and so a person that struggles with inflammation may have a problem if they're having. You know, say, italian foods A lot of my people love, you know, their tomato sauces. A lot of people like their salads. If you're consuming your tomatoes within your tomato sauces, your salads, if you're, you know, making a little bit of I don't know what else is out there Pesto, does that have tomato? I'm not sure if that has tomatoes or not, but anything that you're using tomatoes in many different varieties, that's going to affect you.
Speaker 1:Now, if you have tomatoes and you have red peppers together or not even just red peppers, your red peppers, your yellow peppers, all those are inflammatory markers. All those things can be bad for people that struggle with rosacea and things like that. And then we just have the obvious ones that are like our processed foods, things that we kind of don't think of. So another way I've heard this described if it's in a can or in a jar or in any type of packaging, then that is a processed food, and a lot of times we just we don't realize that there's so many things that are on the market and in our grocery stores today that we really don't think of as bad. For us that really are.
Speaker 1:And it's like for me I mean raising a family and having a family that has a wide range of taste as far as foods, a wide range of ages, it really becomes a struggle for the average consumer to prepare foods that are delicious yet healthy at the same time and, for me, also kid-friendly. So one of the things that I ran across a problem with it's like while we're looking at taking out sugars and everything, we also have to look at grains. Are we using a lot of starches? Are we using a lot of food coloring? And these are things that I personally am aware of, but as time goes on, I mean you kind of have to refine it.
Speaker 1:I know there was a time for me that I would generally, you know, feed my children a lot of processed foods and you just don't think twice about it and you just think, you know, you want them to eat, you don't want them to starve. But then you also want it to be quick. You know you don't always have, you always have time. So then the processed foods become like an easy go-to. Doesn't really seem like a big deal, but let me give you an example. Obviously, kraft, macaroni and cheese is not the best.
Speaker 1:But then how in my household, how we started to refine, it was looking at things like waffles, pancakes, things that you don't really kind of think of per se as bad for you, or things that you don't really think of as processed, but then there really are. So there are some easy or easy or tangible ways that you can try and remedy these situations. For us, what we did in my household was we started to make large batches of pancakes and waffles and then we froze those during the week instead of buying so much of the one, the eggos and the ones that were prepared, and then, instead of doing like cookies and things like that, we would try to substitute some of the sweets with like graham crackers, things like that. We would try to substitute some of the sweets with like graham crackers, things like that and it's like, wow, they did have sugar in them. They didn't have as much sugar as a cookie per se. So it's not all about, you know, just going. You know completely. You know cold turkey. You want to lower the sugar intake. You want to lower a less than a processed foods, but we also want to be realistic about it as well. And it's like for my family, you know, we do it gradually over time. This is how I recommend that you guys kind of do it as well. I mean kids, having small kids especially. It's going to be a struggle, I know.
Speaker 1:For me, sugar was a big one and sugar is really a bad culprit, especially white sugar. Also, we were one of the people that kind of fell in on this organic, not organic sugar. What was the sugar that we were using? That is actually equally as bad the Terminato, if I'm saying it right, the rock sugar. Like the unprocessed sugar, it's still sugar. So we switch that out with agave, while agave is still a sweetener and you don't want to overindulge on it. It's a low glycemic sugar. It's actually something that can be used by people that are diabetic. You can't use honey per se if you have a child that's under the age of 12 months, but we'll also do honey, we'll do maple syrup, we'll do things like that instead of doing like a white sugar or a cane sugar or even, like I said, that, rock sugar. Now there are, like I said, a few things you can do, like cutting down to cut down on your sugar intake. But then the other thing, like I mentioned earlier, you want to reduce is like your white foods.
Speaker 1:White foods would be like white rices, potatoes, white breads, things like that you can swap out with multigrain, you can swap out with wheat. That you can swap out with multigrain, you can swap out with wheat. That was a problem with my kids. But you know what? Eventually we did it. Over time, we did it gradually, we introduced them from the bread to the wheat bread and we started off another brain cramp. We did the wheat bread that is sweetened a little bit. I forgot what it is until I found out that some of those have high fructose corn syrup in it, and then we just went into a regular wheat bread and now they are fine with that. So we transitioned it over time. We transitioned out our pastas into going into like a whole wheat pasta and we did it a little bit over time. We didn't do it all at once and gradually we would mix in like a little bit of white pasta with a little bit of wheat and then we just took out the white pasta all the way and then they eventually did not even notice.
Speaker 1:Another thing you can do is like to opt for farmers markets, things like that, just because the pesticides and the things that are in the grocery store, the shiny waxy apples, just really not good. I mean, the skin of a lot of our fruits and vegetables are where the vitamin and nutrients are and a lot of these fruits and vegetables you can't even consume the skin because the amount of wax and pesticides that are on them that even if you get the so-called fruit and veggie wash what's in that per se you know what I mean Like what is really in that per se, you know what I mean. Like what is really in that other than you know regular water and it's like those waxes you're not really getting those off off the vegetables at all. I mean you can get some of it off, but you can't really get all of it off, and then it's like you're feeding that to yourself and your family too. So, just trying to go to farmer's markets, I know there are some online things like I think it's called, like the ugly grocer or something about ugly foods, like the misfit foods or something like that where you can get produce that is not deemed so pretty Some of the misfits and they are not filled with pesticides and waxes and things like that. Recently I've discovered but I haven't tried it out yet, but I'm going to and I will definitely report back on that is the Thrive Market, which is like an online grocer that caters to different type of diets paleo, low sugar, organic, dairy-free, things like that and they advertise. They have a membership fee, which I believe is like $12 a month or it's $5 if you sign up for the year, which is like 60 bucks, which is really not that expensive, but they weed out a lot of the garbage, and so these are things that we just want to be mindful of. I mean relating it biblically.
Speaker 1:The Bible tells us that our body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. That's a scripture that is in 1 Corinthians, 6, 19 and 20. And that scripture is a scripture. I really want to relate in this. I'm going to read that for you. And it says or didn't you realize that your body is a sacred place, the place of the Holy Spirit? Don't you see that you can't live however you please, squandering what God has paid such a high price for? The physical part of you? Is not some place, some piece of property belonging to, belonging to I'm sorry, belonging to you, the spiritual part of you. God owns the whole works. So let people see God in you and through your body. And that is just like the high price that was paid for us, that the high price that was paid by God bringing his son Jesus down our body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. So if we house the Holy Spirit within us and we're filling our bodies with junk or with things that are not, you know, good for us, then it hinders how the Holy Spirit is allowed to work for us. And let me put that in a way that is easier for you to understand.
Speaker 1:If you are eating a lot of junk foods, if you are eating processed foods, if you're not really paying attention to what you're ingesting in your body, then you're making yourself more susceptible to sickness and I heard someone say this the other day susceptible to sickness. And I heard someone say this the other day that Satan's number one attack against us today is foods. Because if we're eating these foods, we're not really paying attention to the damage that's being done to our bodies. If this damage is being done in a slow yet progressive state, then we're opening ourselves up for infirmity, which is another word for sickness.
Speaker 1:If we are constantly in a state of sickness, if we are constantly in a state where we have diabetes, high cholesterol, different types of ailments that come along, then we are hindered in our walk as Christians because, instead of focusing on praying for the lost souls and the people that are out there that we need to evangelize to and the people that are out there that need to be saved, we're too focused praying on cancer. We're too focused praying on asking the Lord for remedies to remedy our sickness. We're not able to pray effectively because, instead of fueling our bodies with good, nutritious foods, we're just at the grocery store grabbing something quick, grabbing even if it's once in a while, a quick pink candy bar or bag of chips, and then we're sluggish and then, instead of going home and being ready and equipped to read our Bibles and to study the word, as soon as we get in front of the word we know that the enemy is going to attack us and make us sleepy, and it's that much easier if we don't have the right fuel in our bodies. So this is all a strategic plan of the enemy. He knows that we're busy, we're running our lives so fast today that, you know, we just want to make something quick and easy for the kids, we just want them to be quiet, so that, you know, we can hurry up and take a shower and go to bed, and then we want to do the same. So, like I said, we don't have time, you know, to read our Bibles, to have an adequate amount of time for prayer, because we're not fueling our Bibles, our bodies, properly, we're not able to get up and to wake up early so that we can spend time with the Lord, because we don't have the right amount of fuel. So it's just, you know it's a vicious attack and it's like just because something is available and it doesn't seem like it's really that big of a deal.
Speaker 1:I mean, we may go out to eat once in a while and I'm not speaking against that but we may go out every once in a while and we may go out and eat these steaks and sauces and things that are going to clog our arteries. But if the blood cannot pump through our bodies the way the Lord intended it to, then again we're slowed down, then again we're attacked with heart disease. If we have heart disease and all these things that are going on, then how are we going to go out and be effective for the kingdom of God? So it's like, yes, we can go out and we can indulge, but how often are we indulging? Are we indulging too much and are we indulging to the point that it's hindering the work that we are here as Christians to do? So if the Lord came and he redeemed us and he saved us, then he did that not just so that we can sit out and we can do what we want. He did it so that we can go out and we can not save people, because we don't save people, but that we can go out and we can spread the gospel. Now we can't do that if we are too busy on indulging on these different foods and these things, just because they taste good. So we have to have a little bit of discipline with what we eat, we have to be a little bit more restrictive, we have to get exercise and we even have to be careful.
Speaker 1:You know with things that we are taking prescription medications we can't always take. You know what the doctors say at firsthand. You know the Bible says that. You know that the Lord is the great physician. So I always say yes, listen to your doctor and then bring it back to the great physician and see what he says. Submit whatever your doctor says before the Lord and say go to the Lord in your prayer time and say Father, you know, my doctor says this. My doctor says that I should take this prescription, I should have this procedure done, this hip replacement, this, that and the other, this heart procedure, this back procedure. But what do you say, o Lord? Because sometimes and I've even noticed this too is that these doctors are recommending a lot of surgeries, a lot of procedures, a lot of medications that are not absolutely necessary.
Speaker 1:The Bible says in Revelation 22, I think it's 22 too that he is giving us the trees and the leaves for our medications, and this is why I'm so passionate about herbal medication, because with the traditional medications and I shouldn't say traditional, but with the prescription medications there is a side effect. For every medication they give you, there is some type of side effect that's attached to it and they already know what it is in advance and it's going to help one thing but it's going to hinder you in another way. With the Lord's medication he has created the trees, the leaves, everything that we need can be healed. From a natural point of view, every ailment, everything from blood pressure to period cramps, to urinary tract infections, to headaches, there is a herb out there for all of it. But they don't want you to know that. So many doctors are out there that will actually try to do everything in their power to discredit herbal medication and to say that it's not real or speak negatively about it, just because of the kickbacks that are given from the pharmaceutical rights. Again, this is all driven by the enemy. So we have to be aware and this is not.
Speaker 1:Let me clear this up and not advise you to just go and to ditch all your medications and go 100%. You know herbal, but eventually I would say that, yes, that is the goal. Take what your doctor has said and bring it before the Lord in prayer and never, ever ever, come in agreement with any diagnosis that is placed on you, whether they say you have osteoarthritis, or whether they even if they say cancer. I would never come in agreement with that. I would leave it as just as what it is as a diagnosis, because you're allowing something to be spoken over you and once you come into agreement with it, it's true. So this is where you go back in your prayer time and you would say, lord, okay, the doctor has given me a diagnosis of whatever. But what is it that you say? Oh, lord, and how is it that you say that I am to go about to remedy this? Because you are the great physician, you are the alpha omega, you are the Lord over my life, you are the writer of my story. So ultimately, lord God, it's what you say we have to come out of a place of putting the doctors as gods over our lives just because they have a few letters behind their names.
Speaker 1:So I mean and that goes with prescription medications and even over-the-counter medications there are so many over-the-counter medications that actually do more harm than good. I mean, even in natural remedies, as far as over-the-counter medications, there are so many different natural things that you can use that will not hinder your health. For example, we have natural painkillers. If you have a toothache, you can use cloves. If you have any type of sores or anything in your mouth, you can use honey for any type of canker, sores or any type of mouth lesions or things like that in your mouth. You can use black coffee, for example organic coffee that is for migraine headaches.
Speaker 1:Garlic is known very well for infection and also for pain, so you can take garlic supplements. Garlic supplements are also good for heart health as well. You can also take for pain like in your feet. You could use table salt. You can soak your feet in table salt and Epsom salt. Any type of swelling in the feet you come home. For the ladies out there that wear heels all day long, don't just pop a Motrin or a Tylenol. Go ahead and soak your feet in some Epsom salt or something like that. Grapes can be used for back pain. Blueberries and, just like cranberries, can be used for bladder infection. Tumor can be used for chronic pain. Cherries are also used for pain and then for antibiotics. Turmeric, ginger, garlic those are all also natural antibiotic. Horseradish, echinacea, things like that for colds when cold and flu season is coming up, as we're approaching.
Speaker 1:On that, I make an excellent elderberry syrup. You can actually purchase that online from my website or, for those of you that are close by, you can come right in and pick it up. My elderberry syrup I title it as a supercharged elderberry syrup. It's not just elderberry syrup, it's elderberry syrup. It's enhanced with vitamins D, vitamin C, and then I also add a couple other herbs in it. I think one of the things that I use I don't have my recipe right in front of me and I'm also not going to give the whole recipe out, but it's also astragalus cloves, other things like that, that are known to boost the immune system. I know so many people that had lingering ailments from COVID. There was another I think it was RSV, and there was another form of COVID that secondary COVID that went around that actually had people just kind of feeling not quite themselves. They took the elderberry syrup and they were 100% back to themselves Back pain.
Speaker 1:I make different salves and things that you know that you can place on your back and different areas, shoulders, different areas where you might have pain. I also make what I call my natural sporin. I personally myself do not use Neosporin anymore. I make a salve that is antimicrobial, that will help with any type of infections or things of that nature. And again, these are all God-given, natural, organic ingredients, organic herbs, organic leaves. There are so many different things that we can use through teas, through tinctures, through salves.
Speaker 1:I welcome you, if you are looking to know more and to go deeper into these type of things, that you check out my website. Definitely, you know, book a consultation, you can do an online consultation through Zoom. You can do it over the phone. There are so many different ways that we can get you on a path to, you know, natural, herbal healing. Definitely, consider seeking guidance, you know, even from naturopathic physicians. They are kind of expensive, so, herbalists, we don't have a full medical background as a naturopathic physician would, but we can still help you get on the right path. As to, you know, incorporating natural remedies, natural herbs, natural supplements, vitamins, things like that. That can, you know, help you get off of some of these prescription medications.
Speaker 1:And I mean another key scripture that I want to reflect on with this. It's 1 Corinthians 16, 1 Corinthians 6, excuse me 6, 12 and 13, and that scripture reads just because something is technically legal doesn't mean that it's spiritually appropriate. If you went around doing whatever, if I went around and this is Paul if I went around doing whatever I thought I could get away, get by, I'd be a slave to my own whims. So just because we can go out and we can, you know, technically eat cheeseburgers and eat these things, and it's not really sin, no, it's not sin, but it's also not good for you as well. So just a little something, you know, something to take into consideration, as we are just really in a state right now that foods are getting really toxic. It's getting really hard.
Speaker 1:I welcome you to, or encourage you, I should say, to, read your labels, to understand what it is that you're putting in your body and understand more what you're putting in your children's bodies. I mean, even just looking at something it's just been recently brought to my attention the Pepperidge Farm labels. If you look at the Pepperidge Farm labels and a lot of other labels out there, you can clearly see right on the back of these labels that there are statements that will say that it's made from bioengineered foods and it comes from a genetically modified food plant. So to me that's a little bit scary. I mean this is why I'm looking into this Thrive Market and I mean definitely want to make sure that, for the time that I'm on this earth, that I can live well and I can serve the Lord according to his purpose and his plan and do everything to preserve my body so that I can go out and do the work of the Father. So that's just where I'm at with this. Guys, I hope this message was a little bit, not a little bit. I hope it was very encouraging for you and it just helps you to take a look at what you're eating, because the foods, the grocery stores it's a scary place out there. So just to pay and to be a little bit more mindful of ingredients rule of thumb if you can't pronounce it, pass on it.
